Vicks Warm Steam Vaporiser – A Wonder Product!

In my opinion, the Vicks warm steam vaporiser is an essential item for anyone with a baby or young child.  Every time my children have a cough or a cold I unpack this from the bottom of the wardrobe and put it into action!  Let me tell you a little bit more about why this product is a winter essential!

The Vicks warm steam vaporiser maintains a constant flow of warm steam over a 12-14 hour period. This helps to prevent your body from losing essential moisture. Colds, flu and a dry climate can cause dehydration.  You may think in Ireland we don’t have a dry climate – but when the winter comes and all of the radiators are on full blast that’s exactly what we get – dried-out air. Central heating or illness can cause the mucus lining that protects your child’s lungs to dry out and become thick.  Unfortunately, bacterial and viral infections thrive in this type of environment and so respiratory conditions are aggravated when this happens.

When your child has a cold their nasal passageways become inflamed which means the airways are narrowed. Add thicker nasal secretions and your child can suddenly become quite stuffed up and uncomfortable and also be at greater risk of infection.
To alleviate the symptoms of congestion you should increase humidity by using the Vicks warm steam vaporiser.
This will help to reduce the potential survival of the flu virus on surfaces and in the air  It will also help to relieve dry irritated eyes and skin. It will provide relief to a dry and tickly throat and will improve breathing and aid a restful night’s sleep… which let’s be honest is high on the priority list for most parents….for the good of our children of course!!

This is also a great product for soothing coughs as it helps to break down the mucus guilty for chesty coughs and moistens the airways in the case of dry irritating coughs. It’s a natural option which is fantastic for troublesome nighttime coughs as it stays on for 12-14 hours and then shuts off automatically once all of the water you placed in the drum has been released as steam. During the night post nasal drips are at their worst which means that mucus from the nasal passageways is dripping down the back of the throat and into the chest – this can irritate at night and worsen a chesty cough.  It can also be the cause of many seemingly ‘dry coughs’ and so this product is a great solution to these problems as it thins out that mucus which stops it from accumulating and becoming thick and irritating.

I like that it has a night light feature and an automatic shut-off function which means you can turn it on and forget about it. It’s easy to clean and easy to fill. I would say to make sure to open your windows to air the room the morning after using it but I’ve never had any issue using steam in their rooms and to be honest, it’s not an item you have on seven nights a week – although during winter it may be there quite often!!

I have to say if I ever had to recommend one product to a mother of young children this would be it! It’s fantastic at helping with coughs and also nasal congestion. My top tip would be to add a couple of drops of Olbas for children into the little blue dish on the top of the vaporiser at times of severe nasal congestion as this can stop mucus from building up and can reduce nasal drip which in turn means less coughing!! Olbas for children is suitable only from three months of age.
