It is important to give first aid as soon as possible when you are treating a burn or scald, and this is because the skin will continue to burn if the process is not stopped. You should remove any clothing or jewellery that is close to the burn unless it is stuck to the burnt skin, in which case you should not touch it. It is vital to cool the burn with cool or lukewarm running water for at least 20 minutes as soon as you can after the injury occurs and continue to do so after this time if the area is still painful.
If the burn is large or deep, you should seek medical assistance as soon as you can. You should go to the hospital if the burn is larger than the size of the patient’s hand or is on the face, neck, hands, feet, joints or genitals, or if it is a chemical or electrical burn or has caused white or charred skin. You should also seek medical advice if the patient is a child or has an existing medical condition.
