After three children and five and a half years of continuous nappy changing its fair to say as a Pharmacist I have had a vested interest in trying out all of the many many nappy rash creams that are available on the Irish market! I’ve had phases with little or no nappy rash to battle and phases where it has felt impossible to clear! For the last couple of months I have unfortunately been battling a particularly persistent case so I was excited and eager to try the new Mustela 123 Vitamin Barrier Cream which arrived on our shelves in Milltown totalhealth Pharmacy…yes I am that sad – this is exactly the kind of thing that makes my day at the moment!!
So let me start off with the facts, this product contains a specially formulated and patented selection of natural ingredients which have been specifically selected to target the source and symptoms of nappy rash. It is preservative and fragrance free and is suitable for even the littlest of WonderBabas. It contains Avocado Perseose, Alcacea Oxeoline, Sunflower oil distillate and importantly Zinc oxide. These ingredients work together to prevent, relieve or repair nappy rash. It’s worth noting that some forms of nappy rash including fungal and bacterial strains need specific medical treatment but you can read more all about those conditions by clicking here!
I was using and testing this cream during a bad bout of straightforward nappy rash – due to a sensitive bum probably aggravated by teething and general crankiness!! I started off thinking I would test this product for two weeks but actually after two weeks I didn’t want to stop so kept going for four weeks! I can honestly say that I don’t think I’ll ever stop using this product – well until they are all out of nappies obviously!!
How does the texture compare to other nappy creams?
My findings were that the cream is a lovely silky yet consistent texture. It is thinner and less sticky than Sudocrem and really just glides on! I mention Sudocrem because I love the visible barrier that it provides! The Mustela 123 Vitamin barrier cream is thick enough not to disappear once applied but thin and silky enough to glide on without the stickiness and mess. It is kind of similar in consistency to the Wedela Calendula nappy rash cream which I do find really good but it stays in contact with the skin a lot better. The texture and the way it even sits on the skin are reassuring and offer visible yet clean and light protection.
I tried out this product at a very challenging time when even my old favourites such as Sudocrem, Wedela Calendula, and Cicaplast Balme had failed. Within a couple of days the redness and irritaion which had persisted for couple of months was improving and I think it was about day 5-6 when it was completely clear! I have used it at every nappy change since as I find it so handy and convenient to use due to its soft squeeze tube which comes in small or large option so it has been suitable for use at home and in the changing bag. I can’t see myself finding a better nappy cream for general nappy rash – I certainly haven’t come across one yet!
So who are Mustela?
Whilst relatively new to Ireland, Mustela are long established in Europe as a leading mother and baby skincare range. In fact they created the first cleansing lotion specifically designed for babies in Europe! Since 1950 the company have worked to create soap free products for baby’s delicate skin.
Where can I get this cream?
This cream has become a staple in the baby section of my Pharmacy and is actually really competively priced when compared to other similar products.
The 100ml (large) size which is good for the changing table (or bed or couch or floor or where ever you find space to do the job!) is €10.05 and can be purchased by clicking here!
The 50ml (small) size is perfect for the changing bag, costs €6.95 and can be purchased by clicking here!
I don’t write reviews about products I don’t like…as my mother always says – if you have nothing nice to say don’t say anything at all! Mustela 123 Vitamin Barrier Cream is definitely one I was happy to write about and am truly happy to have discovered!
