Wonder Review – The Slumber Bear!

This little bear joined my family whilst I was expecting number three – I wish I had found it sooner! It combines all aspects of the many soothing techniques I tried with my first two to help them become able to self soothe during the night to let us all have some more much needed sleep!  In my personal experience babies love some noise when they are trying to settle.  For my eldest we went through phases where she loved white noise, phases where she loved lullabies playing in the background, and phases where we had to literally ‘shush’ her to sleep! My second daughter didn’t get quite the same array of noises…but did always have music playing from a mobile quite loudly in an effort to block out the noise of her sister or the hoover, or even the dog going mad at the postman! Anything to keep her asleep!! Even now at four and three years of age they have to have some music on just after lights out time – it’s part of our routine and they know it means sleep!  I feel strongly that sleep habits sleep cues are really important, especially when you have a baby who is hard to settle or you are trying to get more than one toddler down to sleep at the same time! Sounds are an easy association for them – they are comforting, relaxing and most of all familiar.  This is the main reason I love the Prince Lionheart Slumber Range – they do the Slumber Bear and recently introduced the Slumber Bunny – I’ll explain the difference in a sec! I just want to give you a little background first to help explain!

One sound option - soothing womb noises
One sound option – soothing womb noises

The original Slumber Bear was invented by a Doctor in 1978 as an audio pacifier.  In essence it’s a cuddly bear which can can actually attach to the side of the cot or sit in it.  It plays actual intra-uterine noises to lull your baby into a comforted sleep.  It initially sounded a little quirky to me… womb noises… but actually when I listened to it I was quickly lulled and relaxed myself and can completely see how the sound of a muffled heart beat can be so comforting to a newborn – after all they have just spent 9 months listening to that very noise in a very safe and comfy place!!  It knocks itself off after five minutes to save the batteries but if your baby cries the bears sound sensors activate it into starting again for another five minutes! It also responds to movement so if you have the bear attached (by the Velcro strapping provided) to the cot and they kick off the cot or move a lot the bear will start again and lull them back into a relaxing sleep.  It provides reassurance without you having to be there, in essence it’s a cue to teach them how to self soothe and  becomes a sleep trigger which can lead to good sleep habits as they get older.  When your baby is old enough not to need the noise you can remove the sound box and it will act as a lovely cuddly toy!  But don’t worry as they will have something to snuggle in the meanwhile – every slumber bear comes with a ‘Silkie’ which is a really, really soft lovely blanket for them to cuddle.  This ‘Silkie’ can adopt the smell of Mum after some skin contact and can act as reassurance for your little one when you are not in the room.

Ok so sounds pretty good right? And it is – and that’s just the original model ( )!

prince-lionheart-slumber-premiumThe bunny is the new version of the Slumber Product – I have a full blog to explain it but the main different features include a USB charger, the option of different sound such as lullabies, waves, white noise and even a recording of your own voice or other sound!   He quite frankly has the softest ears I have ever felt and is a major winner in my house! You can read his full review here –

So I hope that explains what the Slumber Range is all about! Anything that increases the chances of a peaceful few hours sleep is a winner in my eyes i’m not ashamed to admit.. I like this because it is a gentle approach to positive sleep associations. I want to comfort my babies but sometimes if this little bear can do it for me – well…I’ll take all of the help I can get!

In the interest of sleep and mothers sanity all over Ireland I have the bear available here
