The Pros of Probiotics!

The Pros of Probiotics!
Babies’ digestive systems are full of bacteria – good and bad. The important thing for good digestive health is to make sure the balance between the good and bad is right! Did you know a healthy digestive system should have at least 85% of good bacteria. This balance ensures the good bacteria can do their job to keep harmful bacteria at bay. An excess of bad bacteria in babies can result in many conditions such as reflux, colic, diarrhoea, low immunity, and allergies.

Interestingly babies pick up good bacteria from their mothers during birth via the birth canal, so babies who have a caesarean delivery are found to have lower levels of good bacteria after birth. There are also differences between breastfed and bottle fed babies bacteria levels as microbacteria present in milk are killed during pasteurisation during the formula making process.
Whichever path our babies travel to come into our world and whichever way we decide or are destined to feed them one thing is common, we all want the best for our little ones and we are all doing our best! Probiotic supplements can be a great help to babies who are struggling with an unsettled digestive system. Here is a little review of a selection of products which are available to buy in Ireland:
Bio-Kult INFANTIS – This product was previously known as Restore. It is suitable from birth and contains seven strains of good bacteria including the most predominant ones in infants. It also contains omega 3 which is good for lots of things including brain development and immunity, vitamin D3, and perplex. This all amounts to a pretty impressive product which comes in easy to use sachets which can be added to formula and solids and can be given whilst breastfeeding also.
Udo’s Choice Infant Blend – This is also suitable from birth and also contains seven strains of baby orientated good bacteria. However it needs to be kept in the fridge… and it doesn’t come in individual sachets… For me this is a big barrier… I think it would sit in my fridge unused!
Lactoflora for kids – Wow the packaging is off putting. There’s only five doses per pack and they are all in individual bottles. The volume per dose is quite large at 7mls and the usage directions aren’t very clear. Too awkward and fiddly for me and with only four strains of bacteria this product doesn’t really compete with the others.
In summary, The Bio-Kult INFANTIS seems the best product to me in terms of performance and ease of use!
