Honey – Enjoy or Avoid?

honey imageHoney is something I get asked about all of the time in community pharmacy – on behalf of both mums and babies! So whether you already have a baby or you are expecting one – here is what you need to know!

Honey should be avoided for babies who are under one year of age. This is because a babies immature intestines are an ideal breeding ground for bacterial spores which are occasionally found in honey which can cause a rare but serious illness know as infant botulism.

The other question I get asked all the time is if expectant mums should avoid honey – the simple answer is no! Adult intestines are well equipped to destroy any bacteria which can be found in honey and it is not currently recommended to avoid honey in pregnancy! It can provide a healthy and nutritious sweet kick to some foods when you are feeling tired and can help to satisfy cravings for sugary foods! It can also be really useful to soothe a sore throat or ease an irritating or tickly cough especially when added to hot water with a squeeze of lemon!

So absolutely – enjoy honey during pregnancy!
