Baby acne (neonatal acne)

This is a common condition in new born babies. Baby acne occurs predominantly on a baby’s cheeks, nose and forehead but can actually occur anywhere on the face.  It looks like small red bumps or little white heads.  The most common time for it to present is within the first two to four weeks after birth. It can last a few weeks or even up to a few months.  In most cases it will look worse when the baby’s flushed for example when they are upset or crying.  There is no treatment required for baby acne, it’s just a matter of waiting for it to pass. There are a few little things you can do though to help:

  • Wash your baby’s face with a soft facecloth and just some warm water every day , once or twice a day.
  • Don’t rub the skin, just pat it dry gently.
  • Don’t squeeze or pick at any of the little spots as you risk introducing infection.
  • Don’t use any creams or lotions on your babies face.

If you are unsure of what is causing your baby’s spots or if your baby is any way unwell it’s worth a trip to the doctor.  Also if the condition hasn’t resolved itself after about four months then I would bring your little one to the doctor to ensure it is neonatal acne.

I hope this is helpful and as always don’t hesitate to get in touch by private message or phone me at the pharmacy in Milltown, Dublin 6 for further advice (012600262)
